Paula and I had been looking forward to Saturday, July 19, 2003, for quite awhile. Due to circumstances we have not been flying much this year, but this Saturday was to be a double dose! First we were flying to Carl and Kathy Cummins" Owen Air Park grand opening celebration. Then we were fying to Barry and Patsy Brown's Crawdaddy Landing annual BUG Fly-in! We took the fuel truck to Barry's Friday night and then drove home. Saturday morning at 0630 we arose to FOG, major fog, we were competely socked in! Major disappointment. So, we went back to sleep and arose about 0800. It was better and beginning to break up. We had our breakfast, coffee and then preflighted the trike and fueled it and we were ready to go. We lifted off about 1000 hours. The clouds and fog were broken, but it was very overcast and visibility was a mile or less, so we climbed to 4,000 feet. Ah, bright sky as we headed towards Owen County, but about 5 miles out there were no breaks in the clouds, so we did a 180 and headed home. We called Carl and he advised us that the ceiling was 1,700 at Owen Airpark. We took off again and headed NE towards Owen County. We flew between 1100 and 1500 feet and made it to Owen Air Park. We waited for Carl to cut the ribbon on a low flyby in his beautiful Taylorcraft and then landed. We had a great time and visited until a little after noon and then headed to Crawdaddy Landing accompanied by Lee Creech in his Kolb Firestar II, and followed later by Ken Jordan in his biplane. The total flight miles for the day were 210 and it was great air. I have posted the track as the opening to this page and there is a link to the second part of the days flying at Crawdaddy and Lee Bottom on the Banks of the Ohio River. We had a great time even though there was a low turnout due to the fog and low ceiling.
