Bug Blast 2001 had been in the works for awhile and the day had finally arrived! June 8, 9, 10, at the Bardstown Airport, Samuels Field. Paula and I had invited several couples down to stay with us for the event and doing some visiting and local flying. I took off the 7th to make Bald Knob Aerodrome presentable and to assist with some of the flyin preparations. Joe and Vicky Crowe, and Gene Dean and Dorother Suder were coming down from Bloomington, IN, and Indianapolis, IN, respectively to spend the long weekend and fly trikes with us. Gene and Joe were flying down and the girls were driving. I had my radio in the toy shed on Friday morning, but an earlier phone call had advised me that they got off to a late start and probably would not arrive before late morning or early afternoon. I was sprucing up the toy shed and making room for more trikes, cleaning and polishing anticipating our friends arrival and all of the fun we were going to have. I heard the crackle of the radio and could hear Gene and Joe talking to one another. I tried to raise them, but they were still out of range. About 15 minutes later I tried again and they could hear me, they were still about 30-35 miles out. I anxiously listened for the unmistakable sound of Rotax power. Ah, there it is, I didn't have a visual yet, but I could hear them. Suddenly, I saw a red trike and then a yellow one. Great fun is about to begin, let the good times fly! |
